About as close as you can get to the opposite shore of the Moray Firth without having to swim, these rocks are nearly two hundred metres out in to the Moray Firth so you need to be aware of the tides..

The Moray Firth at high tide. At low tide and a hundred metres further out the rocks here would have made for a far more interesting image, as far as the foreground goes. But that wasn’t the only problem. See here for more on that night... 

Normally it’s not possible to see the colour of the aurora with the naked eye, but this rarer red aurora “was” very clear to see.

I was shooting the Milky Way in the opposite direction when this un-forecast aurora fired up! Tested my cardio getting in to position but had to shoot from the road. By Lochindorb on Dava Moor, Highland region.

Reflecting in the Moray Firth while I was standing thigh deep in it!

So called because the far rock looks remarkably like a breaching dolfin, to me anyway, since as far as I know this rock doesn't have an official name.

It’s not possible to tell from this image, but my tripod was set up on a very precarious rock surrounded by thigh deep water with an incoming tide. Setting up, and staying dry, was equally precarious and quite painful due to jagged rocks and the contortions that with my list of injuries I’d rather have avoided. And the fun wasn’t over. This spot is effectively in a rock amphitheatre, after a series of shots were taken, with the incoming tide, I could only escape with the use of a rope.

There’s a lot more goes in to these images than meets the eye.

All night waiting before the Northern Lights came alive while I was need deep in the Moray Firth against the incoming tide. Not the best of timing!!
